Abstract
The globalization and rapid commercialization of healthcare services have transformed health tourism—which encourages individuals to travel across international borders for medical treatment—into one of the most strategic areas of the modern tourism industry. This study aims to determine the significance of the push and pull factors that play a decisive role in health tourists' choice of Istanbul as a destination. The universe of the research consists of healthcare institutions operating in Istanbul, while the sample includes 15 large-scale private and public hospitals selected through random sampling, providing comprehensive services. A semi-structured interview technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was employed; the data obtained were analyzed using the content analysis method and divided into thematic categories. Research findings prove that the presence of high-quality and large hospitals (29.1%), the high education level of physicians (25%), and the city's geopolitical position (16.6%) are the primary pull factors in choosing Istanbul. All participants (100%) emphasized that the international reputation of doctors and accredited healthcare standards have an absolute impact on patient preferences. While plastic surgery, orthopedics, and oncology stand out among the most demanded branches, the impact of social media (33.3%) on institutional awareness has surpassed traditional reference methods. On the other hand, the insufficiency of foreign language skills among personnel (35%) and the lack of international accreditation were identified as fundamental areas for development. In conclusion, to maintain Istanbul's status as a global health "hub," it is recommended to increase inspections, strengthen digital marketing strategies, and institutionalize technical language training for employees.
