Abstract
This study aims to systematically analyze the competitive strategies of public and private high schools preferred by successful students within the scope of the High School Entrance System (LGS) in Türkiye. Designed within a qualitative research approach, the study included a literature review and examined the mission and vision statements published on the institutional websites of 30 schools, comprising 15 public and 15 private high schools, through content analysis. In this way, the study comparatively evaluated how schools’ competitive strategies become visible in the institutional discourses of high schools. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis and classified within the categories of differentiation, focus, and cost leadership. The findings indicate that private high schools discursively adopt differentiation, focus, and cost leadership strategies, whereas public high schools predominantly adopt differentiation and focus strategies in their institutional discourse. Private high schools appear to seek competitive advantage through international programs, dual-diploma opportunities, entrepreneurship support, and individualized learning models, while public high schools maintain their competitive positioning through science- and mathematics-oriented education, science olympiads, and programs that support academic achievement. Accordingly, making high schools’ academic, scientific, social, cultural, and technological activities more visible in their institutional discourse may contribute to strengthening their institutional identity. Future studies may include strategic plans, activity reports, and stakeholder views in the analysis, thereby enabling a more comprehensive examination of the relationship between schools’ institutional discourses on competitive strategies and their actual practices.
