Abstract

Abstract After the occupation of İzmir, the passive attitude of the Istanbul Government caused some intellectuals to lose hope that the homeland could be saved. According to them, if the sincere relations that had continued for centuries between the Turks and the British were revived, the sympathy of the British was gained, and their protection was secured, many of the harmful decisions intended to be implemented against the Ottoman State could be prevented. During this period, protecting their economic interests in Türkiye was also one of the indispensable goals for the British. In line with this, they wanted to have an association established that would operate through Turks who supported them. Sait Molla, one of the members of the Council of State, volunteered for this task. Sait Molla submitted the association’s declaration to the Ministry of the Interior on May 20, 1919, and the English Friendship Society in Türkiye was officially established. The English Friendship Society had both open and secret aims and activities. Although it occasionally carried out open activities under the appearance of a civil society organization, it was essentially the center of activities against the National Struggle. The society weakened and dissolved depending on the success of the National Struggle.

Özet

Özet İzmir’in işgalinden sonra, İstanbul Hükümeti’nin pasif tutumu, bazı aydınların memleketin kurtarılabileceğine dair ümitlerini yitirmelerine sebep oldu.
