Abstract
This study analyzes the eye color distribution of leading actors in films listed in the IMDb Top 200 within the context of visual idealization and the production of symbolic superiority in cinema. Although brown eyes constitute the overwhelming majority of eye colors in the global population, the prominent representation of blue-eyed heroes at the center of popular cinema is interpreted not merely as a random physical distribution, but as a symbolic formation that legitimizes the aesthetic preferences of the culture industry. Conducted through quantitative content analysis, the study examines the eye colors of leading actors in cross-tabulations with the variables of film language, production origin, gender, and historical period. The statistical significance of these relationships was assessed using chi-square tests and Cramer’s V coefficients. Fisher’s exact test was used as a complementary procedure in analyses involving low expected cell frequencies. The findings show that blue-eyed leading actors constitute 45.5% of the sample; this rate rises to 51.9% in English-language productions and to 53.0% in U.S.-origin productions, while decreasing to 20.0% in non-English productions, where brown-eyed leading actors become dominant at 75.0%. These differences are discussed within the framework of Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital, Hall’s concepts of representation and encoding/decoding, and Baudrillard’s concept of hyperreality. The study argues that cinema not only makes certain bodily features visible, but simultaneously encodes them with meanings such as suitability for the leading role, ideality, charisma, and heroism. The cinematic prominence of blue eyes reveals how a biological bodily trait acquires a representational value that can be interpreted as cultural capital, while also making visible the silent mechanisms of visual hegemony and the production of a hyperreal standard of beauty.
