Abstract
This study aims to examine the interdisciplinary interaction between the plastic arts and cinema developing within the context of surrealist aesthetics through the concept of visual rhythm Grounded in the emergence of cinema as a synthesis of plastic and rhythmic arts, the structural parallels between the static rhythm in painting and the rhythm of stationary objects in cinema are addressed. The study problematizes how the non-rational structure of surrealism, based on the unconscious and dreams, achieves harmony with the phenomenon of rhythm, which is one of the most fundamental prerequisites of artistic form. For this purpose, selected frames from René Magritte’s painting Golconda (1953) and the films Poesia sin Fin (2016) and La Montana Sagrada (1973) by Alejandro Jodorowsky, one of the prominent representatives of avant-garde cinema, are comparatively analyzed through Bruce Block’s visual rhythm components (alternance, repetition, tempo) and Henri Lefebvre’s rhythmanalysis approach. Conclusively, it is determined that the method of psychic automatism, employed by surrealists with the claim of being free from aesthetic and moral concerns, inevitably produces a plastic and compositional rhythm due to the inherent internal rhythm of the human mind and the unconscious.
