Abstract
Newspapers contribute to the construction of social reality and carry functions such as raising public consciousness, agenda setting, informing and warning. The main research question of this study is within which frames the drug problem — both a public health and a security issue — is presented in the press, and what discursive pattern this presentation produces. All drug-related news items (357 in total) published during the first six months of 2022 in the five nationally distributed newspapers with the highest average daily circulation were examined through a coding schedule of thirteen criteria, using a mixed method that integrates quantitative content analysis with discourse analysis; the discursive reading was carried out at the levels of macrostructure, microstructure and rhetorical organisation, following Van Dijk's model of news discourse. Inter-coder agreement across three independent coders was assessed with Scott's pi, yielding an aggregate value of pi = .78. The findings show that the great majority of the items are operational and judicial in focus, that educational, warning or preventive items remain very limited, and that drug-related items rarely appear as lead headlines. A statistically significant association was found between news type and page of publication (chi-square(4) = 12.44; p = .014; Cramer's V = .13): operational and judicial items cluster on the third page above the expected frequency, whereas educational items fall below it. One in four headlines (25%) employs sensational or tabloid-style discourse, while roughly one in five (18%) includes quantified accounts of seizures and arrests. Newspapers present the drug problem largely within the scope of crime and operation reporting rather than through the function of informing the public, positioning the issue as a security threat rather than a public health matter.
