Abstract

Kintsugi, an important part of Japanese aesthetic sensibility, is the art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, silver, or other precious materials. This art emphasizes that breakage and repair are valuable parts of an object's history. Kintsugi is not merely a repair technique but also embodies philosophies such as sustainability, appreciation, and redesign. This understanding brings a sustainable perspective based on repair, revaluation, and longevity to fashion design. This study aims to evaluate the art of Kintsugi, an important element of Japanese aesthetic understanding, in the context of sustainable fashion and innovative design processes. Within the scope of the research, the basic principles of Kintsugi art were interpreted to create designs for a vest, pants, and a skirt. The designs treat the metaphors of breakage and repair as aesthetic elements and reveal the visual and philosophical reflections of Kintsugi through details applied to the garment surfaces. These applications were evaluated in terms of transforming flaws into aesthetic value and creating an innovative design language in line with sustainability principles. As a result, it has been emphasized that Kintsugi is not only a traditional art but also an approach that inspires sustainability and innovative design processes in fashion. This study highlights that Kintsugi goes beyond creating aesthetic value in the fashion industry and also influences environmental considerations in production processes.
