Abstract

Traditional education organizes subject matter into separate disciplines and expects students to establish connections among these areas themselves. In contrast, educational approaches that seek to promote critical and creative thinking have led to the development of curricula that integrate different disciplines in various ways. Foreign language education has also been influenced by these developments, and interdisciplinary practices have gained increasing importance, particularly in teaching English as a foreign language. This study aimed to explore how parallel interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches implemented in English language instruction were perceived by the participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interview forms from 31 students who participated in the instructional implementation and 16 teachers who were informed about both approaches. The responses were categorized and analyzed according to their content. Most teachers preferred the multidisciplinary approach because of its potential to facilitate connections among subjects and make learning more meaningful and lasting. The majority of students found the integration of English with other disciplines beneficial, particularly for learning new vocabulary and developing writing and graph-reading skills. However, some students found the activities boring at times, and most reported that the implementation did not make a noticeable contribution to their learning or achievement in other subjects. Teachers identified interdisciplinary collaboration, joint planning, time requirements, and the need for sufficient knowledge of different subject areas as the main challenges associated with implementing these approaches.
