Abstract

This study systematically investigates the decisive role of local mass distribution on the vibro-acoustic performance of lightweight polymer-based structures, using a 3 mm thick circular PLA plate. Aiming to enhance the efficiency of sound exciters emerging as an alternative to traditional loudspeakers, an eccentric (off-center) attachment configuration was preferred to stimulate asymmetric modes. Sequential modal, harmonic structural, and harmonic acoustic analyses conducted within the 0–5000 Hz frequency range reveal the impact of a 200-gram local mass at eight different positions on the plate. The obtained data proves that mass placement directly governs not only the vibration amplitude but also the acoustic sound transmission efficiency. According to the analysis results, it was observed that targeted increases in sound pressure level (SPL) in specific frequency bands, or reductions through mode suppression, can be achieved by strategically positioning the local mass. For instance, it was determined that the change in mass position caused a variation of approximately 8 dB in terms of SPL. This research presents to the literature that local mass placement can be utilized as a strategic design variable that optimizes vibro-acoustic performance, rather than being a random structural load.
