Abstract

In industrial facilities with a high concentration of nonlinear loads, harmonic distortion can vary depending on load and process characteristics. In this study, three-phase field measurements from six production and auxiliary operation points at a textile plant were analyzed. Total harmonic distortion of current (THDI), total harmonic distortion of voltage (THDV), total power factor, displacement power factor, and prominent harmonic components were examined at the preparation–heater, preparation–drive, twisting, steam fixation, air compressor, and compressor dryer points. Measurements from a 2,500 kVA transformer with compensation disabled were used as the facility reference. The relative priorities for examining the processes were determined using an equally weighted exploratory score based on average THDI, average THDV, and power-factor separation. The highest average and maximum THDI values were determined to be 61.79% and 64.62%, respectively, in the steam fixation process, while the highest phase THDV value was measured at 8.05% in the air compressor process. In the relative ranking, the steam fixation process was followed by the air compressor and twisting processes. The fact that the average THDI value at the facility level was lower than that of some processes indicates that a single measurement at the facility level may not adequately reflect local harmonic differences. The findings demonstrate that power quality assessments must be supported by simultaneous, long-term measurements at the process level.
