Abstract
This study examines the functions of food, spices, the kitchen, and dining table imagery in the construction of cultural memory in A Touch of Spice (2003) through a cine-gastronomic approach. The study is based on the premise that gastronomic elements in the film do not function merely as aesthetic or decorative devices supporting the narrative, but rather as cultural signs that enable the remembrance of the past and its transmission across generations. Accordingly, the research focuses on how representations of food and spices are associated with Fanis’s childhood memories, family relationships, experience of displacement, and practices of remembering Istanbul. The research was designed within a qualitative research framework, and the film was examined through descriptive analysis based on predefined analytical categories developed around the axes of cine-gastronomy and cultural memory. The film was analyzed particularly through Fanis’s childhood memories, his relationship with his grandfather Vassilis, the spatial contrast between Istanbul and Athens, the symbolic meanings attributed to spices, and the identity-forming function of dining rituals. The analysis revealed that food in the film is not merely a nostalgic element evoking the past; it also functions as a cultural practice that reconstructs a lost place, gives meaning to the experience of exile, and sustains diasporic belonging. Spices such as black pepper, cinnamon, and salt are associated with meanings including pain, love, loss, balance, and the continuity of life, thereby becoming signs that express both the characters’ inner worlds and their historical experiences. The study demonstrates that gastronomic imagery in A Touch of Spice (2003) becomes a central narrative device mediating between individual recollection and cultural memory. Istanbul is represented as a sensory site of memory reconstructed through Fanis’s childhood experiences, family relationships, tastes, and smells, whereas Athens emerges as a space in which memory and cultural belonging are renegotiated following displacement. In this context, the film employs food practices as a form of cultural memory through which the past is remembered, transmitted, and reproduced within everyday life.
