Abstract

Cinematographic production has traditionally been understood as a mode of expression grounded in the camera’s capacity to capture physical reality; the aesthetic and narrative significance of the image has largely been derived from its indexical relation to the external world. The development of generative artificial intelligence technologies, however, is transforming this recording-centered ontology by relocating cinematic images into an algorithmic, synthetic, and prompt-driven field of creation. This shift signals not only a technical advancement but also a theoretical reconfiguration of the role of the creative subject and the concept of authorship. The primary aim of this study is to examine this transition through the lens of promptography and to investigate the contemporary relevance of the creative subject and the auteur concept in film production. The study positions promptography not merely as a novel method of image generation, but as a paradigm that redefines the epistemological and aesthetic framework of cinematic perception. As the prompt evolves from a simple descriptive linguistic command into a generative apparatus that simultaneously configures framing, lighting, atmosphere, genre aesthetics, and narrative intention, the creative process becomes a hybrid model of agency shared between humans and algorithms. In this context, the auteur evolves from the traditional director endowed with full control over the physical set into a designer-manager figure who orchestrates algorithmic production, regulates the field of aesthetic possibilities, and establishes a coherent cinematographic unity. This study argues that AI-driven cinematographic production does not invalidate auteur theory; rather, it transforms it both functionally and conceptually. By approaching AI-based image generation as a theoretical threshold that necessitates the reconsideration of creative subjectivity, authorship, aesthetic responsibility, and the distribution of agency within film studies, the article seeks to contribute a contemporary perspective to ongoing ontological and aesthetic debates in the field.
