Abstract

In the meaning-making processes of visual communication, metaphor has moved beyond its role as a purely linguistic device and has become a constitutive component of design practice. This study aims to examine the functions of minimalist visual metaphor strategies in visual communication by addressing them from a theoretical and visual-analytical perspective within the field of graphic design. The research identifies seven core minimalist visual metaphor strategies: formal reduction, the use of negative space, visual combination, symbolic substitution, visual double meaning, scale manipulation, and the use of silhouette and single-object representation. It also investigates the role of these strategies in the conceptual design process. The study systematically analyzes these strategies through selected poster examples. The findings indicate that minimalist visual metaphor functions as an effective design strategy in terms of persuasiveness, immediate perception, memorability, and intercultural readability. These dimensions were selected to evaluate the capacity of minimalist metaphor to communicate messages rapidly, involve the viewer in the production of meaning, and create a strong visual effect across different contexts. The study demonstrates that minimalist visual metaphor is an effective strategy that contributes to conceptual thinking and meaning-making processes in terms of graphic design theory.

Özet

Görsel iletişimin anlam üretme süreçlerinde metafor, salt dilbilimsel bir araç olmanın ötesine geçerek tasarım pratiğinin kurucu bir bileşeni hâline gelmiştir. Bu çalışma, grafik tasarımda minimalist görsel metafor stratejilerini kuramsal ve görsel analiz odaklı bir perspektiften ele alarak söz konusu stratejilerin görsel iletişimdeki işlevlerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma, biçimsel indirgeme, negatif alan kullanımı, görsel birleştirme, simgesel yer değiştirme, görsel çift anlam, ölçek manipülasyonu ile siluet ve tekil nesne kullanımı olmak üzere yedi temel minimalist görsel metafor stratejisini tanımlamakta ve bu stratejilerin kavramsal tasarım sürecindeki yerini sorgulamaktadır. Çalışma, söz konusu stratejileri seçilen afişler üzerinden sistematik biçimde analiz etmektedir. Bulgular, minimalist görsel metaforun ikna edicilik, anlık algı, akılda kalıcılık ve kültürlerarası okunabilirlik açısından işlevsel bir tasarım stratejisi olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu boyutlar, minimalist metaforun mesajı hızlı iletme, izleyiciyi anlam üretimine dâhil etme ve farklı bağlamlarda güçlü görsel etki yaratma kapasitesini değerlendirmek amacıyla seçilmiştir. Çalışma, minimalist görsel metaforun grafik tasarım kuramı açısından kavramsal düşünme ve anlam üretimi süreçlerini açıklamada işlevsel bir tasarım stratejisi olduğunu göstermektedir.
