Abstract

Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the motor proficiency and cognitive functions of preschool-aged children born large for gestational age (LGA). Methods: A total of 10 term-born children in the LGA, including 3-girls and 7-boys, were included in the study. Children's motor proficiencies were assessed with the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, Second Edition-Short Form (BOT2-SF), which has 8-subtests: fine motor precision, fine motor integration, manual dexterity, bilateral coordination, balance, speed and agility, upper-limb coordination, and strength. Cognitive functions were assessed with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence–Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV). In addition to the Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ), the WPPSI-IV consists of 5 sub-sections: the Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI), Visual Spatial Index (VSI), Fluid Reasoning Index (FRI), Working Memory Index (WMI), and Processing Speed Index (PSI). Results: The ages of LGA children born with a gestational age of 37-40 weeks (median=37.5) and a birth weight of 3760-4400 grams (median=4030) were 53-68 months (median=58). The BOT2-SF standard-scores ranged from 35-to-56 (median=42), and the WPPSI-IV FSIQ ranged from 76-to-120 (median=99.5). The WPPSI-IV sub-sections showed relationships between PSI and bilateral coordination (r=0.875; p=0.001), speed and agility (r=0.632; p=0.05), and strength (r=0.694; p=0.026), while FRI showed a relationship with upper-limb coordination (r=0.754; p=0.012), fine motor integration (r=0.684; p=0.029), and the BOT2-SF standard-score (r=0.652; p=0.041). VCI was only associated with the BOT2-SF standard-score (r=0.673; p=0.033), while FSIQ was associated with bilateral coordination (r=0.731; p=0.016). Conclusion: LGA children showed a wide range of motor proficiency and cognitive functions; there were particularly correlations between processing speed, fluid reasoning and some motor skills. Correlations between verbal comprehension and motor proficiency; cognitive functions and bilateral coordination, indicate that language skills and general cognitive capacity may be parallel to motor development. These results suggest that some aspects of motor and cognitive development in LGA children may be related and emphasize the importance of including both parameters in follow-up assessments in early childhood.
