Abstract

This study aimed to examine general trends in postgraduate theses addressing gender in preschool education. The study was designed as a descriptive trend study based on document analysis. The data source comprised 58 postgraduate theses available in the Turkish Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center that met the predefined inclusion criteria. Data were collected using a Thesis Review Form developed by the researcher and analyzed through descriptive content analysis. The theses were examined in terms of publication year, degree type, university, research method, participants, sample size, data collection tools, data analysis techniques, and thematic focus. The results showed that 51 were master’s theses and seven were doctoral dissertations, with research activity concentrated particularly between 2019 and 2023. Qualitative methods were used in 32 studies, quantitative methods in 23, and mixed methods in three. Documents and educational materials were the most common data sources, whereas content analysis, descriptive statistics, and correlation analysis were the most frequently used analytical techniques. Gender was most often examined through children’s books, media content, children’s perceptions, and teachers’ classroom practices. The results highlight the need for more doctoral, mixed-methods, multi-stakeholder, instrument-development, and intervention studies.
