Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the Geometric Habits of Mind (GHoM) utilized by 7th-grade students and to examine the relationship between these habits, geometry achievement, and Van Hiele geometric thinking levels. To this end, the study was conducted using a correlational survey model involving 120 seventh-grade students attending three public middle schools. The data were collected using the “GHoM Determination Test,” the “Geometry Achievement Test,” and the “Van Hiele Geometry Test.” While the data obtained from the GDABT were analyzed using a scoring rubric, the data from the other instruments were analyzed using statistical software through descriptive statistics, simple linear regression, and Pearson correlation analysis. The results indicated that the students' levels of GHoM were below intermediate level. Furthermore, it was observed that students frequently utilized the habits of "reasoning with relationships" and "balancing exploration and reflection" during problem-solving. Statistical analysis indicated moderate, positive, and significant relationships between GHoM scores and both geometry achievement and Van Hiele levels. Additionally, the results showed that geometric habits of mind scores significantly predicted both geometry achievement and Van Hiele geometric thinking levels. Based on these findings, it is recommended that Geometric Habits of Mind be explicitly integrated into mathematics curricula.
