Abstract

Sleep disorders are a common concern among cancer patients, significantly affecting their quality of life during treatment. This review examines complementary and integrative therapeutic approaches aimed at improving sleep quality. Studies indicate that approximately 75% of cancer patients experience sleep problems, which are not always effectively managed with pharmacological treatments. The interventions discussed include sensory stimulation techniques (aromatherapy, music therapy), mind–body practices (yoga, meditation), traditional energy-based methods (qigong, reflexology, tai chi), and point stimulation approaches (acupuncture, acupressure). Aromatherapy, particularly the use of lavender oil, has been shown to enhance sleep quality and reduce stress. Music therapy has demonstrated efficacy in alleviating anxiety and shortening sleep onset latency. Practices such as yoga and meditation improve sleep by regulating stress-related hormones. Traditional exercises like qigong and tai chi have been found to support energy balance and improve sleep quality. Acupuncture and acupressure have been reported to increase sleep efficiency and reduce reliance on sleep medications. In conclusion, these complementary methods offer safe and effective strategies for managing sleep disturbances in cancer patients. Their integration into nursing care may contribute to improved patient outcomes and enhanced quality of life. However, further clinical research is needed to strengthen the evidence base.
