Abstract
This article focuses on the logical relationship between the ontological nature of mutawātir khabar and its epistemological foundation. The study investigates whether the "impossibility of agreeing upon a lie," as cited in the definition of mutawātir khabar, is intellectual (‘aqlan) or habitual/empirical (‘ādatan). While some existing studies suggest this impossibility is intellectual, others state it is habitual. Some works mention the existence of both intellectual and habitual records in the literature, but fail to conduct an ontological and epistemological discussion regarding the cause of this difference or the correct approach. The aforementioned gap in the literature constitutes the basis for this article. By discussing the subject from ontological and epistemological perspectives, this paper seeks to address this gap and correct occasional errors in the field. By correlating the subject with logical and epistemological foundations—such as the nature of information, intrinsic possibility (zāti imkān) and intellectual impossibility—the article argues that the impossibility is not intellectual, but habitual. It is observed that the common approach in classical kalām and usul al-fiqh literature favors habitual impossibility. However, it has been determined that a significant portion of the literature from the Ottoman and Republican periods has overlooked this aspect, continuing to characterize it as intellectually absurd (muhāl), precluded (mumtanī‘) or impossible. This article offers an original contribution to the literature by drawing attention back to the habitual nature of the impossibility of agreeing upon a lie in mutawātir khabar, linking it to the intrinsic possibility that defines the nature of the report and grounding the habitual obstacle to ontological probability through its relationship with intellectual judgments.
