Abstract

Hasan Basri Demirer’s Ismailism in India is a comprehensive study that examines the historical development of Ismailism in the Indian subcontinent from both theological and sociological perspectives. The work analyzes the formation and transformation processes of different branches of the sect in India within a holistic framework, taking into account their historical background. It also provides a detailed evaluation of how Ismaili thought, shaped since the Fatimid period, was transmitted to the Indian context, its interaction with local religious traditions, and the communal structures that emerged through this process. In this way, the study clearly demonstrates how Ismailism was shaped not only within Arab and Iranian-centered historical contexts but also within the multilayered socio-cultural structure of the Indian world. Considering the limited number of studies in Türkiye on the manifestations of Ismailism in the Indian subcontinent, this work makes a significant contribution to the field and paves the way for further research.
