Bu makalede, Cumhuriyet dönemi mezhepler tarihçiliğinin önemli isimlerinden biri olan Hasan Onat’ın ilmî, eğitsel ve edebî kişiliği ele alınmaktadır. Çalışmada, Onat’ın bir mezhepler tarihçisi olarak benimsediği disiplinlerarası yaklaşım, eleştirel düşünceyi merkeze alan bilim anlayışı ve ilahiyatı sosyal bilimler içerisinde konumlandırma çabası üzerinde durulmaktadır. Bu bağlamda dinin yalnızca iman boyutuyla değil, aynı zamanda bilimsel yöntemlerle incelenmesi gereken bir bilgi alanı olduğu yönündeki görüşleri ve onun akademik duruşu değerlendirilmektedir. Ayrıca, bilimsel bakış açısı ile hazırladığı yöresel sözlüğün ilişkisi üzerinde durulmaktadır.Makalenin bir diğer boyutunda, Onat’ın insana verdiği değer, kapsayıcı yaklaşımı ve millî duyarlılığı ele alınmakta; bu özelliklerin onun kültürel mirasa bakışıyla olan ilişkisi ortaya konulmaktadır.
