The Turkish defense industry has undergone numerous transformations throughout history, particularly achieving remarkable growth over the past twenty years. This study aims to examine developments in the defense industry within a historical context, spanning from the Ottoman Empire to the present day, to identify the key factors influencing this transformation, and to analyze the current level of institutional and technological advancement. The research examines domestic production initiatives in the early years of the Republic, the structural disruption caused by the subsequent embargo, and the restructuring period that began with the establishment of the Defense Industry Presidency in 1985. In addition, the nationalization policies, R&D investments, and technology-focused projects that gained momentum in the 2000s are comprehensively evaluated. Using historical analysis, the study systematically examines the factors that have influenced the development of the defense industry. The findings reveal that technological advances, geopolitical imperatives, political will, and institutional structure are the key factors determining the sector's development. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to the literature by addressing Turkey's transformation in the defense industry from a historical and holistic perspective.

Türk savunma sanayii, tarihsel süreç içinde birçok dönüşüm yaşamış, özellikle son yirmi yılda dikkat çekici bir gelişim kaydetmiştir. Bu çalışma, Osmanlı’dan günümüze uzanan süreçte savunma sanayii alanındaki gelişmeleri tarihsel bağlamda incelemeyi, bu dönüşümü etkileyen temel faktörleri ortaya koymayı ve günümüzde ulaşılan kurumsal ve teknolojik seviyeyi analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmada, Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarındaki yerli üretim girişimleri, sonrası ortaya çıkan ambargo sürecinin yarattığı yapısal kırılma ve 1985 yılında Savunma Sanayii Başkanlığı’nın kurulmasıyla başlayan yeniden yapılanma dönemi ele alınmıştır. Ayrıca 2000’li yıllarda hız kazanan millîleşme politikaları, Ar-Ge yatırımları ve teknoloji odaklı projeler kapsamlı biçimde değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmada tarihsel analiz yöntemi kullanılarak savunma sanayiinin gelişiminde etkili olan unsurlar sistematik biçimde incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, teknolojik ilerlemeler, jeopolitik zorunluluklar, siyasi irade ve kurumsal yapılanmanın sektörün gelişimini belirleyen temel faktörler olduğunu göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, Türkiye’nin savunma sanayii alanındaki dönüşümünü tarihsel ve bütüncül bir perspektifle ele alarak literatüre katkı sunmayı hedeflemektedir.
