Abstract

In the research, the affective tendencies and attitudes of classroom, science and social studies teachers towards teaching socioscientific issues (SSI) were examined in terms of gender, place of residence, branch and level of following scientific journals or publications. Additionally, the relationship between affective tendencies and attitudes was analyzed. The research was carried out with the participation of 161 teachers (99 female, 62 male) working in primary and secondary schools in the 2022-2023 spring semester. Descriptive statistical techniques were used within the framework of the relational screening model based on quantitative research methods. Data were collected through the “Personal Information Form”, developed by Topçu (2010), the “Attitude Scale Towards SSI”, created by Sakmen and Genç (2021), the “Affective Tendency Scale Towards SSI Teaching”. T-test, One-Way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Analysis were used in the analysis of the data. In line with the findings, while the difference between gender and attitude was determined; no difference was found between affective tendency and attitude. Although there was no difference between place of residence and subject matter and affective tendency and attitude levels, social studies teachers' self-efficacy perceptions were higher compared to those in other subjects. While there was a difference between following scientific journals or publications and affective tendency, no difference was found in attitude levels. A positive and strong correlation was found between affective tendency and attitude scores. Pedagogical field competence, perception of benefit and importance, and attitude were significantly correlated. As a result, it is recommended that the SSI be involved in teacher training and in-service training, that the following of scientific publications be encouraged, and that teachers share their practice examples.
