Abstract

The aim of this study is to reposition Plato’s philosophy of music beyond traditional pedagogical and cosmological readings, reconsidering it through the axis of the Phaedrus dialogue. In modern scholarship, Plato’s views on music have generally been examined within the framework of moral education in the Republic and the mathematical order of the cosmos in the Timaeus. Against this backdrop, it may be argued that the genuine metaphysical core of Platonic musical ontology is constructed in the Phaedrus. In this context, three claims can be derived from the Phaedrus: the winging of the soul, divine inspiration (theia mania), and the audible manifestation of the Idea of Beauty. The findings of this research endeavor to demonstrate that music in Platonic thought is not merely an instrument of social discipline, but an ontological element that orients the soul toward the world of Ideas and brings it into contact with truth. This aesthetic-metaphysical foundation, laid in the Phaedrus, is regarded as the constitutive principle underlying the ethical harmony of the Republic, the erotic ascent of the Symposium, and the cosmic harmony of the Timaeus.
