Abstract
The interaction between visual arts and music, a phonetic art form, has opened up entirely new perspectives, in addition to the internal dynamics and close relationships within visual arts themselves. Efforts to concretise the abstract, based on personal perception and interests, have manifested themselves in various ways. This study adopts a qualitative research method to analyse the formal visual expression of jazz music transformed into posters through graphic design and typography. In this context, it examines how the characteristics of jazz music, such as improvisation, rhythm and harmony, are reflected in the innovative designs of jazz artist and graphic designer Niklaus Troxler, focusing on the visual representation of sound. To this end, fourteen different posters were selected using purposive sampling from the designer’s jazz posters, which embody the building blocks of music and the characteristics of jazz music through the fundamental visual elements of typography, highlighting his creative narrative forms in terms of typography, form, and colour application. The transformation of images, events, and emotions into music, and the transformation of music and the feelings it evokes into images, is subjective. Although various digital experiments exist, it is clear that when approached within a framework of personal interpretation, as in this study, there will be countless interpretations and differing opinions.
