Abstract

In this study, we pursue two main objectives by using time series data for the period February 1994-August 2025 of Türkiye. The first is to determine the time series model that best models the CPI-based real effective exchange rate (REER) variable and then obtain the possible real effective exchange rate uncertainty (CV-REER) variable. The second is to investigate both the causality relationships of these two variables between themselves and the causality relationships of these variables with the foreign trade (export & import) and real sector confidence index variables. For these purposes, we use AR(I)MA models, symmetric (ARCH, ARCH-M, GARCH, GARCH-M) and asymmetric (EGARCH, TARCH, PARCH) conditional heteroscedasticity models and Granger causality test. The findings show that the REER variable is best and smoothly modeled with the TARCH model following the AR(p) model. Afterwards, the CV-REER variable is obtained via the TARCH model. According to the Granger causality test findings, there is a bilateral causality relationship between REER and CV-REER. Another finding is that these two variables have no causality relationship with export. However, we find that there are bilateral causality relationships between REER and import, and unidirectional causality from import to CV-REER. Finally, we find that the unidirectional causality relationship from REER to real sector confidence index and bilateral causality relationship between CV-REER and real sector confidence index. All these findings indicate that the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT) should closely monitor REER and CV-REER, taking into account the asymmetric structure of financial markets, and determine the exchange rate policy according to the needs of the economy.
