Abstract

Globally and in Turkey, the rapidly increasing elderly population and declining fertility rates are reshaping family structures, caregiving roles, and traditional care systems. In Turkey, elder care has historically been provided within the family and has been strongly associated with filial responsibility. Nowadays the transition from extended to nuclear family structures and along with the increasing participation of women in the labor force are gradually reducing families’ capacity to provide full-time informal care. This study examines how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are reshaping the informal care economy and caregiving practices within the context of intergenerational solidarity. AI-powered technologies such as smart home systems, assistive robots, fall detection devices, digital health systems and virtual assistants are supporting the daily lives of older adults and enabling them to age in place. These technologies have the potential to reduce the caregivers’ workload, enhance performance in care processes and improve the safety of older individuals. Furthermore, social robots are also providing support to older adults in addressing issues of loneliness and social isolation. However, the integration of artificial intelligence into informal care processes also raises significant ethical and social concerns. There is a risk of new forms of inequalities emerging in areas such as data privacy, technological isolation, algorithmic bias and the digital divide. Furthermore, technology-driven care risks weakening the relationship-oriented, warm, intimate and compassionate dimensions of caregiving. Therefore, it is essential to conceptualize artificial intelligence as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human care. In conclusion, this study examines the transformative role of artificial intelligence in informal elderly care from different perspectives. It highlights the need for a balanced socio-technical approach that integrates ethical considerations, social equity and human-centered care practices.
