Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for Turkey. The EKC hypothesis explains the relationship between economic growth and environmental quality. It suggests that environmental pollution increases in the early stages of economic development as income rises. However, after a certain income level is reached, pollution begins to decrease due to technological progress and greater environmental awareness. Previous studies on Turkey have widely tested the EKC hypothesis. However, the results are mixed and often contradictory, depending on the data and methods used. To provide a clearer understanding, this study uses a non-linear econometric approach. In this context, a Markov-Switching model is applied using time series data covering the period from 1960 to 2023. This model is preferred because it can capture structural changes and different economic periods more effectively. The results do not support the traditional inverted U-shaped relationship suggested by the EKC hypothesis in Turkey. Instead, the findings point to an N-shaped relationship for certain periods. This means that although pollution may decrease at some stages of economic growth, it can increase again in later stages. In addition, the results show that energy consumption has a significant and positive effect on environmental degradation throughout the entire period. This suggests that energy-intensive production remains a major challenge for environmental sustainability in Turkey.
