Abstract
This research aims to examine the relationships between the happiness levels of university students and socio-cultural and socio-economic indicators by addressing the social dimensions of the feeling of happiness. The study was conducted on 942 associate and undergraduate students studying at Bayburt University. The study was designed using a general survey model from quantitative research methods; the Oxford Happiness Scale and questionnaire items related to socio-cultural and socio-economic indicators were used as data collection tools. The obtained data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis to determine the relationships between variables related to happiness level. The research findings show that there are positive and statistically significant relationships between students' happiness levels and adherence to traditions and customs, participation in social rituals, sense of social belonging, family and kinship relations, religious practices, and social relationships. In particular, it was determined that the variables of perceiving family as a source of trust and support, valuing kinship ties, and valuing establishing good relationships with people showed stronger relationships with happiness. In contrast, attitudes expressing independence from social relationships and prioritizing digital relationships over face-to-face relationships were found to be negatively related to happiness. In conclusion, it appears that the happiness levels of university students are closely related to their social and cultural context. This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the importance of social ties and cultural norms in understanding the happiness of young people.
