Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between the recent improvement in Turkey's structural current account balance and the changing use of imported inputs in the manufacturing industry. The findings reveal that the real sector is the primary source of improvement in the structural current account balance. Behind this improvement lies not only an increase in real sector savings but also a relative slowdown in the use of direct imported inputs across the industry. Sectoral analysis demonstrates an import-substitution-driven improvement in sectors such as textiles, automotive, and refined petroleum products, while it identifies an increased dependence on imported inputs in basic metals and chemicals sectors, posing a risk to structural gains. The study emphasizes the necessity of sectoral policies supporting R&D and domestic supply chains in sectors with high import dependency for a sustainable external balance.
