Abstract

In this study, the price and income elasticities of car imports in Türkiye estimated and proposals were presented to increase import substitution. The findings show that import demand is quite sensitive to developments in prices and income. Accordingly, the existence of a competitive domestic production alternative in the sector may lead to consumer preferences turning to domestic products in case of exchange rate-related price increases. However, it is evaluated that additional macroprudential measures may contribute to this process as well.

Özet

Bu çalışmada tüketim malları ithalatının en önemli kalemini oluşturan binek otomobil ithalatının yapısı incelenmiş, sektör ithalatının fiyat ve gelir esneklikleri tahmin edilerek ithal ikamesini artırıp, ithalatı azaltacak öneriler sunulmuştur. Bulgular binek otomobil ithal talebinin fiyat ve gelirdeki gelişmelere duyarlı olduğunu göstermektedir. Buna göre sektörde rekabetçi yerli üretim alternatifinin olması kura bağlı fiyat artışlarında tüketici tercihlerinin yerli ürüne yönelmesine yol açabilmektedir. Bununla birlikte ilave makro ihtiyati önlemlerin bu sürece katkı sağlayabileceği değerlendirilmektedir.
