Abstract

The pandemic period has significantly and negatively affected the Turkish economy, as in all countries around the world. Under the extraordinary conditions of the pandemic period, significant declines occurred in both consumption and production volumes. Because the restrictions imposed by the state in order to restore public health have caused both consumption habits to change and consumption volume to decrease. Decreases in consumption volume affected many macroeconomic variables, especially unemployment and economic growth. With this prepared study, the effects of changes in unemployment, inflation and money supply in Turkey during the pandemic period on economic growth were analyzed by time series method using quarterly data obtained from the Central Bank EVDS for the period 2014q1- 2024q2. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that a 1% increase in inflation increased GDP by 0,22%, but this effect was not statistically significant. However, according to the same analysis results, a 1% increase in the money supply increased the GDP by 0,97%, a 1% increase in the unemployment rate reduced the GDP by 0,40%, and lastly, the pandemic caused an average increase in the GDP of 0,189%. was found to cause a decrease. As a result, while the expansion in money supply positively affected economic growth, the unemployment rate had a negative effect on growth. In addition, as expected, considering the basic macroeconomic literature in economic theory, it has been determined that the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affects economic growth in Turkey.
