Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to examine the relationship between pregnancy perception and prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy among primigravidas and the factors associated with these variables. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-correlational study included 311 primigravidas who attended a private hospital in Konya between April 22 and May 30, 2025. Data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, Negative Perception of Pregnancy Scale (NPPS), and Prenatal Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (PBSES). Descriptive statistics, group comparisons, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Results: Primigravidas had a moderate level of negative pregnancy perception (36.90±11.66) and a high level of prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy (76.85±12.72). A weak negative correlation was found between NPPS and PBSES scores (r=−.143, p=.012). In the multiple linear regression analysis, middle and high income levels were independently associated with lower negative pregnancy perception, whereas experiencing problems during pregnancy was independently associated with higher negative pregnancy perception (R²=.054, p=.001). In the prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy model, receiving antenatal care and spousal support were independently associated with higher self-efficacy (R²=.135, p<.001). The independent association between negative pregnancy perception and prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy was no longer statistically significant after adjustment for other factors (β=−.091, p=.096). Conclusion: The weak association between negative pregnancy perception and prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy among primigravidas did not remain statistically significant after adjustment for other related factors. The findings highlight the importance of regular antenatal care and spousal support in supporting prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy.
