Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between caregiver burden and well-being among relatives caring for stroke patients. Material and Method: This study is a descriptive and correlational cross-sectional study conducted with 138 family caregivers of patients with stroke receiving treatment in the neurology and outpatient clinic of a university hospital. Data were collected using the “Introductory Information Form Survey”, “Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale”, “WHO-5 Well-Being Index”, and “Barthel Index”. Results: The average age of the individuals was 52.35±14.13 years. Among the participants, 68.1% were female, 75.4% were married and the majority were in nuclear family. Of the individuals participating in the study, 33.3% reported that their health was not affected during the time they provided care to the patient, and more than half reported that providing care to the patient did not affect their economic situation. A statistically significant difference was found between the average total scores of Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale and individuals’ income status, whether they lived with the patient, the impact on their own health during the period of care, and the economic impact of providing care. A statistically significant difference was found between the caregivers' employment status, the effect of providing care to the patient on the economic situation, and the total mean scores of the WHO-5 Well-Being Index. A positive significant relationship was found between the duration of caregiving and their care burden, and a negative significant relationship was found between their care burden and their well-being. Conclusion: The care burden of caregivers negatively affects their well-being. It is very important for caregivers need to be supported socially, economically and psychologically in order to reduce their care burden and increase their well-being.
