Abstract

Dating rock paintings is quite difficult, even with current technology. Various recent studies have been conducted on this topic. Pigment or lichen analyses on painted rock paintings are examples. Even these analyses do not provide direct dating, but rather indicate a specific date range. One of the currently accepted dating methods is typological description and analogy. Therefore, a single depiction of a cavalry among the rock paintings (petroglyphs) found in the Borluk Valley constitutes the subject of this study. Borluk Valley is located 6 km southeast of Kars city center. The area with the highest concentration of rock paintings in the valley is between the villages of Azat and Mağaracık. This location is approximately 4 km long. Around 160 rock paintings have been identified along the northern slopes of the valley. Some of these paintings, which extend along the valley, are depicted on two panels called "Kervan" (Caravan) and "Katran." The rock paintings depict various animals, including deer, mountain goats, wolves, gazelles, and horses. The cavalry depiction in question consists of a single example from a different location, in addition to these two panels. Studies have holistically evaluated the rock art in the Borluk Valley, proposing various datings ranging from the Paleolithic Age to the Bronze Age. However, the use of horses as mounts occurred in the first quarter of the second millennium BCE. The earliest date for the cavalry depiction is the Middle Bronze Age (TPQ). It is possible that the Borluk Valley rock art also dates from the same period. In this context, the fact that the cavalry depiction, even a single example among the rock art in Borluk, indicates a historical period demonstrates its distinctive significance.
