Abstract
This study examines 38 metal crosses from the Samsun Museum collection, which reflect the civil and religious life of Byzantine metalwork, from a typological and analogical perspective. These finds, acquired by the museum through purchase, donation, and confiscation, and whose precise archaeological contexts are unknown, were dated using a comparative analogy method with similar museum and excavation finds in Anatolia and its surrounding areas. While the works are divided into two main types based on their form characteristics – Latin and Greek crosses – the anthropomorphic influence of the form was used as the basis for determining the arms of the crosses. The collection is classified under four main headings according to their intended use and functional categories: pendant, consecration, polycandelon and applique crosses. Technically, all crosses were made using the casting method, and engraving, relief, and carving techniques were applied. The most frequently observed decorative element in the collection is the circle-dot (circle-dot) motif, symbolizing the five sacred wounds of Jesus and the multiple eye motif as a protective measure against the evil eye. Iconographically, the crosses in this study depict Mary and the child Jesus in a proportional pose, along with figures such as Saint Basil, Theodore, George, and the Archangel Michael. Typological and analogical evaluations indicate that the crosses in our study, with their characteristics extending from Late Antiquity to the Early Byzantine period and the subsequent simplification process after Iconoclasm, point to the Early and Middle Byzantine periods.
