Abstract

Tao-Klarjeti is a term used by modern historians to define the geographical region in which the principalities located in southwestern Georgia were situated during the Middle Ages. Owing to its location on the Byzantine frontier, the region was partially protected from Islamic incursions, and numerous monasteries and churches were constructed there. Consequently, the region became an important center of attraction for Georgian culture and art during the Middle Ages. These monasteries and churches are among the most significant examples of Georgian art, distinguished not only by their dimensions, plan schemes, materials, and construction techniques, but also by their architectural decoration programs. As an integral component of the buildings, architectural decoration is one of the subjects that has received considerable scholarly attention. In this context, the present study examines and evaluates the founder reliefs depicting founders offering church models, identified in the monasteries and churches constructed in the region. The earliest identifiable founder relief in the region dates to the ninth century, while the latest example is dated to the eleventh century. A total of nine buildings contain founder reliefs, including the churches of Opiza, Petobani, Dolishana, Tibeti, Oshki, Zegani, Tskarostavi, and Akhasheni, which were constructed over a period of approximately two centuries, some of them on a monumental scale. These reliefs provide significant information both about the identities of the founders and about the buildings they commissioned through the church models they hold in their hands. Therefore, founder reliefs should be regarded as an important source of evidence for understanding the architectural characteristics of buildings that have not survived or have been partially destroyed
