Abstract

Background and Aim: This study evaluated the cleaning efficacy of different irrigation protocols in removing calcium hydroxide by SEM image analysis. Material And Methods: Fifty single-rooted mandibular premolars were manually instrumented to a master apical file of size 50. All experimental teeth and the positive controls (n=5) were filled with Ca(OH)2, whereas the negative control (n=5) teeth did not receive medication. After one week storage, roots were randomly divided into four experimental groups (n=10) according to the volume and application time of EDTA used to remove Ca(OH)2 medication : NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min)- EDTA (2 ml, 1 min)- NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min)(Gr 1), NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min)- EDTA (2 ml, 3 min)- NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min)(Gr 2), NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min)- EDTA (5 ml, 1 min)- NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min) (Gr 3), NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min)- EDTA (5 ml, 3 min)- NaOCl (2 ml, 1 min) (Gr 4). The roots were split in the bucco-lingual direction and prepared for SEM analysis of cervical, middle, and apical thirds. Three observers evaluated the root canal wall cleanliness using a scale of 1 to 5. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis analysis at a 5% level of significance. Results: The high volume and long application time of EDTA represented significantly less remnants of medicament in the middlethird of root canals compared to other experimental groups (p<0.01). Conclusion: Increasing the volume and application time of EDTA and NaOCl did not improve removal of calcium hydroxide from canals.
