Abstract

This study examines the TV series Adolescence through the core concepts of Bowen Family Systems Theory. Using qualitative document analysis, selected scenes were analyzed in terms of eight concepts: differentiation of self, triangles, the nuclear family emotional system, the family projection process, emotional cutoff, the multigenerational transmission process, sibling position, and societal regression. The findings show that the characters’ behaviors and relationships are largely shaped by low differentiation of self, chronic anxiety, and dysfunctional relational patterns. In particular, unresolved emotional processes are transmitted from parents to children, family tension is regulated through triangles, and multigenerational transmission is prominent. Social pressure and stigmatization also negatively affect family functioning, while dysfunction within the family is reflected at the societal level. Overall, the series offers a concrete illustration of Bowen’s concepts and provides a useful framework for understanding both family relationships and their broader social implications.
