Abstract

Addiction is not merely an individual mental disorder, but a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by family structure, cultural norms, and relational dynamics transmitted across generations. Roles, communication patterns, and emotional interactions within the family play a decisive role in the formation of what is defined as the “addiction culture in the family.” This structure is influential in the progression of substance use into a disorder and in the maintenance of addictive behaviors. In such family environments, children are exposed to various psychosocial and developmental risks due to processes such as parentification, emotional neglect, role confusion, and the intergenerational transmission of trauma. This review examines the effects of the addiction culture in the family on children within the frameworks of systems theory, attachment theory, and intergenerational transmission. In addition, it discusses the role of couple and family therapy approaches in transforming this culture and offers theoretical and practice-oriented recommendations.
