Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between eating addiction and depression in obese individuals, as well as examining the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with these conditions. Material and Methods: The research was conducted based on descriptive research principles. The study took place between August 1, 2023, and December 1, 2023, at the Obesity Center of Samsun Education and Research Hospital, following the acquisition of necessary permissions and ethical approval. A total of 142 obese individuals who volunteered to participate in the study were included. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Beck Depression Scale (BDS), and the Modified Yale Food Addiction Scale (mYFAS). Researchers employed a face-to-face survey method for data collection. The SPSS 25.0 program was used to perform descriptive statistics, group comparisons, correlation analyses, and logistic regression analyses. A statistical significance level of p 0.05). Eating addiction was significantly more prevalent among individuals with a BMI of at least 40 kg/m² (p < 0.005). Depression was significantly more prevalent among individuals with low income (p < 0.01). A weak but significant positive correlation was found between food addiction and depression level (r = 0.270, p < 0.05) and BMI (r = 0.288, p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk of food addiction was lower in the 56–73 age group (OR = 0.124, 95% CI=0.023–0.656, p=0.014) and higher in individuals with a BMI ≥ 40 kg/m² (OR=4.196, 95% CI=1.540–11.428, p=0.005). Logistic regression analysis identified low income level as an independent risk factor for depression (OR=2.628; 95% CI: 1.121–6.159; p=0.026). Conclusion: Depression and eating disorders are common among obese individuals, and the two conditions are significantly related. In this sample, which consists predominantly of women, morbid obesity and a low income level are important risk factors. When managing obesity, it is important to include psychiatric assessments and comprehensive approaches to eating behaviors in the treatment process.
