Abstract
In the Ottoman mindset, the self/other distinction was seen through many concepts. The discriminatory, exclusionary and intolerant atmosphere, which perceived those who were not one as the other; therefore as a danger and enemy to one's own world, was also experienced in Turkish literature with its motivating or provoking aspects. The discussion on the extent to which the state's organs, cultural values, science, literature and social areas would adapt to modernization, which was expressed through the discourse of Westernism, created an environment in which the Ottoman intellectuals were dragged into a conflict of ideas through newspapers and magazines. In this environment, hate speeches that went beyond the boundaries of literary criticism began, with the defense that they were corrupting the language by imitating the French Symbolists. In this environment, which lasted approximately four years (1896-1900), the Servet-i Fünûn members were defined as decadent. For those who were influenced by French literature and used abstract concepts, the decadent discourse, which started with language and turned into a language of violence that extended to their religion, turned into a systematic tool of othering through the concept. In this environment where Western culturalist discourses exceeded the framework of literary discussion, symbolic lynching discourses were carried to newspaper and magazine columns. In the conflicts that went beyond the scope of literary polemics, the writers who first used decadent as a definition of othering, brought the measure of anti-innovation in language to the level of hate speech. The study focuses on examples of the use of the concepts of decadent and decadence as “the construction of language's discourse on the other.” Our time frame is the second half of the 19th century, and our database consists of a selection of newspaper/magazine articles on the subject.
Bu ortam içinde Fransız sembolistlerine özenerek dili yozlaştırdıkları savunusuyla Servet-i Fünûnculara dekadan sıfatı üzerinden edebiyat eleştirisi sınırlarını aşan nefret söylemleri başladı.
