Abstract

This study examines the similarities and differences between Emmanuel Levinas and Judith Butler by focusing on relationality, responsibility, justice and ethics. Considering that the two thinkers belong to different historical, philosophical and political traditions, it aims to show how Levinas’s ethical philosophy informs Butler’s postmodern approach. Based on qualitative and comparative analysis, the article first presents the main concepts of Levinas’s ethics, then analyses Butler’s treatment of precarious life, grievability and violence. It finally evaluates the points of convergence and divergence between the two thinkers. The study argues that the hypothetical dialogue between Levinas and Butler provides a significant lens for rethinking ethical responsibility and justice in a world marked by inequality, violence and exclusion. It also contributes to a deeper understanding of how existentialist ethics and postmodern political critique may be brought into productive conversation.
