Abstract
The Qur’an and the Torah both recount the event in which the sea split when Prophet Moses struck it with his staff, allowing the Israelites to cross to the other side. Pharaoh and his army, who followed them through the opened path, were drowned as the waters returned and closed over them. In past centuries, this event was regarded as an extraordinary miracle. However, in more recent times, various alternative views have emerged regarding its nature. The aim of this article is to identify and analyze these different perspectives and determine which is the most accurate. The study follows a textual analysis method. Our primary sources include the Qur’an, the Torah, authoritative works of tafsir and kalam, as well as reputable historical sources and inscriptions. Four main views have been identified regarding the parting of the sea: According to the first view, the parting of the sea was a miraculous event of an extraordinary nature. This view predominates in traditional Jewish, Christian, and Islamic thought. The narrative style of both the Qur’an and the Torah supports this interpretation. The overwhelming majority of classical Islamic scholars have also accepted this event as a miracle characterized by supernatural qualities. According to the second view, the event occurred within the framework of certain natural laws and was an ordinary phenomenon that merely appeared extraordinary. With the emergence of Enlightenment thinking in the West, a different perspective developed—first in the Western world and later in the Islamic world—arguing that miracles cannot contradict the laws of nature. Those who adopt this view regard the parting of the sea as an event that took place in accordance with natural laws. Therefore, they have attempted to explain it through natural phenomena such as tidal movements, sea recession due to strong winds, tsunamis, the probabilistic nature of physical laws, and secondary causes. However, proponents of this view have not been able to agree on a single natural cause, and at least five different theories have emerged on the subject. According to the third view, an agnostic stance should be taken regarding miracles, including the parting of the sea. Proponents of this view argue that even those who witnessed miracles could not explain how they were brought about, and that even if such an event were to occur before our very eyes, we still would not be able to comprehend how it happened. Therefore, they suggest that the most appropriate attitude toward miracles and other events that remain unknown to us is to resort to theological agnosticism. According to the fourth view, Moses is not a historical figure but a completely mythological character. The parting of the sea is likewise considered a mythological event associated with him and is regarded as having no historical reality. In our article, all of these views were discussed with their evidence, an dik was concluded that the splitting of the sea was a real event.
Özet
Hz.
