Abstract
The science of Qira’at (Quranic recitations) is a fundamental branch of knowledge within the tradition of Islamic sciences that preserves the integrity of the Quran’s wording and meaning, examining the diverse modes of its revelation through a systematic discipline. The primary objective of this science is to identify the variations in the pronunciation of Quranic words, categorize these differences based on authoritative documentation (sanad), and safeguard the chains of transmission. Within Qira’at literature, this technical diversity is methodologically analyzed through two primary axes: Usul (general principles) and Farsh (lexical variations). Usul topics generally consist of phonetic rules that apply consistently throughout the Mushaf based on specific principles, executed without causing structural changes in the words. This set of rules includes elements such as tafkhim (velarization), tarqiq (attenuation), imalah (vowel inclination), tashil (facilitation), and idgham (assimilation), which are largely rooted in dialectal and accentual differences. In contrast, Farsh variations are specific narrations concerning unique changes in letters and vowels for individual words, which can directly affect the lexical meaning or grammatical structure. The prevailing trend in contemporary Qira’at studies is to characterize usul topics as purely phonetic elements focused solely on pronunciation, devoid of any impact on meaning. According to this classification, while Usul represents the aesthetic and decorative dimension of recitation, Farsh is viewed as the technical domain where semantic shifts occur. However, many subjects examined under the heading of Usul perform a semantic/anallogical function beyond being a mere sound phenomenon. For instance, the application of tashil or madd (prolongation) in certain words can directly influence whether a sentence is perceived as an interrogative (istifham) or a declarative statement. Similarly, issues such as ibdal (replacement), isbat (retention), and hazf (omission)—though often viewed as morphological transformations subject to i‘lal rules—are not merely concerns of morphology (sarf); they are also factors that shape the tense of the verb or the subject-object relationship. This situation necessitates freeing the concept of “usûl” from the narrow confines of “mere phonetic differences” and linking it to the deep structure of the language and to meaning. This article aims to demonstrate that methodological differences in Qur’anic recitations—such as teshîl, ibdâl, and isbât—are not merely phonetic variations independent of meaning, but rather, in certain instances, possess a semantic structure that either limits or expands the meaning. It should not be overlooked that the diversity of recitation methods creates a rich semantic field that is not limited to the rules of i‘lâl and phonetic pronunciation. This perspective indicates that the wording of the Qur’an possesses a miraculous structure which, in terms of methodology, points not only to phonetic pronunciation rules but also to distinct layers of meaning in every nuance. The article employs an academic methodology grounded in the relationship between recitation and exegesis through the lens of ‘linguistic transformation’, utilising qualitative research methods such as document analysis and comparative text analysis.
