Abstract

The Industrial Revolution and globalization, along with increased urbanization rates, have contributed to the emergence of a number of urban and environmental problems. Today, the population, mostly living in urban areas, faces significant environmental and urban challenges. In this context, the concepts of quality, quality of life, and livability gain importance in urban and environmental contexts. Quality is related to the needs and expectations of individuals. Environmental and urban quality of life, on the other hand, is related to many tangible and intangible elements in and around the city, such as infrastructure and cultural heritage. The aim of this study is to evaluate the concepts of urban and environmental quality of life and livability, in their subjective and objective dimensions, using a comparative analysis method based on the examples of Sürsürü and Ulukent (Hüseynik) neighborhoods in the central district of Elazığ Province. This study involved a literature review, face-to-face interviews with the Republic of Türkiye Elazığ Municipality Directorate of Planning and Urban Development in 2019, and surveys conducted with a total of 100 people (50 from each of the Ulukent (Hüseynik) and Sürsürü neighborhoods in the central district of Elazığ Province) selected using a simple random selection method. All data and results obtained were evaluated using a comparative analysis method. According to the evaluations, it can be said that Sürsürü Neighborhood is relatively more livable and has a higher level of urban and environmental quality of life compared to Ulukent (Hüseynik) Neighborhood.
