Abstract

This study comprehensively examines the effect of local residents’ perceptions of tourism impacts on support for tourism development in Diyarbakır and the mediating role undertaken by quality of life in this process. The main aim of the research is to determine how the socio-cultural and economic changes created by tourism are reflected in the life satisfaction of local residents and how this reflection shapes their attitudes toward the future development of tourism. In the study, which adopted a quantitative research method, the data were collected through a questionnaire technique from 389 participants residing in Diyarbakır. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS structural equation modeling. The research findings confirm that the socio-cultural and economic impacts of tourism directly and positively affect both tourism development and the quality of life of local residents. However, the most original and critical result of the study is that quality of life plays a negative mediating role in this relationship. This finding shows that although tourism development creates economic opportunities and social revitalization, factors such as increasing tourist density, rising living costs, environmental pressures, and excessive pressure on infrastructure may damage the daily living comfort of local residents. Consequently, the study emphasizes that sustainable tourism success in a destination with a deep-rooted cultural heritage such as Diyarbakır requires planning approaches that are not solely focused on economic growth, but also protect the quality of life of local residents, minimize costs, and preserve the social fabric of the city through a multidimensional structure.
