Abstract

This study aims to show that Hume’s interpretation of Stoicism is not sufficiently grounded and that, consequently, his critique of Stoicism fails to be valid. Hume claims that, in Stoicism, reason plays a suppressive role with respect to the passions, thereby producing a conflict between reason and passion. This claim is problematic for two reasons. First, Hume interprets the Stoic concept of passion (pathos) by detaching it from its original meaning. Second, and relatedly, he understands the Stoic ideal of freedom from the passions (apatheia) as a merely negative limitation of emotions. However, if the Stoic ideal of apatheia is to be interpreted as a kind of limitation, this limitation should not be conceived as merely negative, but rather, in a way more faithful to the structure of Stoic philosophy, as positive and transformative. Reading the concept of pathos in its original Stoic context, rather than through a Humean framework, enables us to see that reason in Stoic philosophy does not function as a negative faculty that suppresses all emotions. On the contrary, reason plays a positive role of discrimination and guidance, making good emotions (eupatheiai) a legitimate element of moral action.
