Abstract

This article argues that Spinoza’s Ethics should not be understood as a normative moral doctrine prescribing what one ought or ought not to do, but rather as an ontological framework that articulates modes of existence capable of increasing an individual’s power of acting (potentia agendi). Against moral systems structured around prohibition, guilt, obedience, and duty, Spinoza reconceptualizes ethical life through the immanent dynamics of conatus, affects, and adequate ideas. In this sense, Ethics is no longer a system of external commands but a practical ontology of empowerment grounded in the intelligibility of existence itself. Drawing primarily on Gilles Deleuze’s interpretation of Spinoza, this study reconstructs Spinozist Ethics as a philosophy of capacities rather than norms, emphasizing the distinction between morality (morale) and Ethics (éthique) as two fundamentally different regimes of evaluation. The article develops this distinction through a series of conceptual tensions—normativity versus ontology, prohibition versus capacity, sin versus loss of power, obedience versus understanding, and duty versus conatus—and shows how Spinoza dissolves these oppositions by grounding ethical value in immanent causal relations rather than transcendent laws. Within this framework, ethical failure is not conceived as moral transgression but as a diminution of power, a decrease in one’s capacity to affect and be affected. Ethical success, by contrast, consists in the composition of relations that enhance joyful affects and enable more adequate forms of understanding. Ultimately, the study contends that Spinoza’s Ethics offers a radical alternative to moralizing discourses by redefining ethical life as a practice of understanding, composition, and empowerment—an immanent art of living rather than a code of commandments.
