Abstract

This study examines the impact of fear of crime and xenophobia on the participation of local residents in recreational activities in areas with high concentrations of Syrian refugees under temporary protection status in Turkey. The primary objective of the research is to reveal the restrictive effects of anti-immigrant attitudes and security concerns on recreational activities. Conducted in the Altındağ district of Ankara, this study employs a semi-structured interview technique to deeply analyze the fear of crime and xenophobic attitudes of 31 participants. According to the findings, a significant portion of Turkish citizens living in Altındağ report that the presence of Syrian refugees heightens their security concerns and reduces their participation in recreational activities. Participants' fear of crime is intensified by concerns related to physical assault, sexual violence, and theft. Xenophobic attitudes, on the other hand, are exacerbated by the belief that Syrians do not integrate socially, leading to further restrictions on individuals' daily activities. The results of the study indicate that fear of crime and xenophobia create substantial limitations on recreational activities.
