Abstract
Public order was a significant concern in Anatolia both at the end of the War of Independence and in the immediate aftermath of the proclamation of the Republic. During this period, the hardships of war, economic instability, and the broader process of social transformation contributed to widespread security challenges. The newly established Republic not only focused on consolidating political authority but also took on the vital responsibility of fostering public trust in the state and ensuring societal order. In this context, the local press played a critical role in informing citizens and shaping public opinion—particularly in rural areas. At a time when the national press had yet to gain substantial influence, local newspapers frequently highlighted everyday legal cases and public security issues. These publications regularly reported on incidents that disrupted public order—such as murders, assaults, thefts, smuggling, brawls, drunkenness, and suicides—bringing them to public attention and calling for solutions. The city of Balıkesir serves as a concrete example of the influential role local journalism played in this formative period. This study primarily aims to examine public order issues in Anatolia during the early Republican period in Türkiye and to explore how the local press addressed these challenges. In this context, the case of Balıkesir will be used to analyze both the nature of these public order problems and the ways in which they were brought to public attention through the local newspapers of the time, namely, Zafer-i Millî, Karesi, and Türk Dili.
